When what we read turns into hands-on learning ... when our classrooms become real-world learning centers ... and when our #CommunityPartners bring their knowledge to our students, incredible things happen!
That was the case with some of our English 9 students who read and annotated the text "Everyone Should Learn Basic First Aid."
To bring the information to life, teachers Megan Seyler and Zena Tunnell invited Officer McCauley and Officer Ryan from Maryland Department of Natural Resources - Natural Resources Police to their classroom to speak with freshmen about first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and safety in emergency situations.

An incredibly moving and powerful ceremony tonight at Stephen Decatur High School as the ribbon was officially cut on the school's Morgan's Message Dedication Wall, a physical installation to bring awareness of the importance of student mental health. From our hallways back to our hallways, Mary (Malone) Hathaway (#SDHSClassOf2007) represents all of the great things that come from #DecaturNation. 💙🖤🤍
Her passion for history, dedication to the profession, enthusiasm for service, and heart for students inspire us every day. A National Board Certified teacher, Hathaway teaches Advanced Placement World History and African American Studies. Additionally, Hathaway has advised the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, currently serves as a Homecoming Coordinator, and is affectionately known as the Queen of Cans after winning the annual school-wide food drive several years in a row. She was raised by #TheDecaturWay and is still rockin’ it.
Thank you, Mary Hathaway, for making a difference both in and beyond the classroom. This distinction is so well-deserved! 🏆
